Psychological Consulting Services
Robert H. Joss, Ph.D.
Dr. Joss is a Designated Forensic Psychologist / Forensic Mental Health Supervisor who provides expert testimony in Juvenile, District, Superior, and Probate Courts. As a Qualified Examiner/Retained Expert, he performs evaluations regarding sexual dangerousness. He testifies in probable cause hearings, renders opinions regarding commitment, competency, criminal responsibility, aid in sentencing, and guardianship. He has also testified before the Sex Offender Registry Board. Dr. Joss is an emeritus Professor of Psychology at Gordon College and spent more than a decade as a psychologist for the Lynn District Court. He performs fitness for duty evaluations, is trained in alternative dispute resolution, and serves as Guardian ad Litem and Parent Coordinator for the Probate Courts.
Dr. Schaefer is an experienced clinical and forensic psychologist who provides expert testimony in Juvenile, District, Superior and Probate Courts. He has extensive experience with police and fire departments, municipalities, corporations and schools, providing fitness-for-duty evaluations and risk assessments. Currently, he provides pre-employment psychological screening for public safety candidates in numerous towns and cities across the Commonwealth. As a Qualified Examiner/Retained Expert, he performs evaluations regarding sexual dangerousness. He has testified at numerous Sexually Dangerous Persons trials, both for the Commonwealth and the Respondent, and has testified before the Sex Offender Registry Board. He frequently serves as Guardian ad Litem for the Probate Courts, and has experience as Parent Coordinator.

Christine Schnyder Pierce, Ph.D.
Dr. Pierce is a clinical and forensic psychologist with extensive experience performing forensic evaluations for the Juvenile, District, Superior, Probate, and Federal Courts. Dr. Pierce renders opinions on various competencies, criminal responsibility, civil psychiatric commitment, risk for violence, and aid to disposition. For many years she served as a Designated Forensic Psychologist to the Massachusetts court system. As a Qualified Examiner/Retained Expert, she performs evaluations regarding sexual dangerousness. Dr. Pierce has testified at numerous Sexually Dangerous Person trials, for both the Commonwealth and the Respondent, and has testified before the Sex Offender Registry Board. Dr. Pierce received forensic training with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Jeff D. Stein, Ph.D.
Dr. Stein is a clinical and forensic psychologist who provides expert testimony to the Probate, Juvenile, and District Courts. He routinely serves as a Guardian ad Litem for several Probate Courts including Essex, Suffolk, Middlesex and Worcester counties. He conducts psychological evaluations of adults, juveniles, and families, and he renders opinions regarding competency, criminal responsibility, aid in sentencing, parental fitness and guardianship. He conducts sexual dangerousness evaluations as a Qualified Examiner and member of the Community Access Board at the Massachusetts Treatment Center. Dr. Stein also consults to Special Education departments, schools and universities and conducts evaluations of prospective police and fire personnel. He provides services in Worcester as well as our Salem office. He obtained his certification as a Designated Forensic Professional (DFP) from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

Joseph J. Begany, Ph.D.
Dr. Begany is a forensic neuropsychologist providing a wide range of forensic evaluations for children, teens and adults. Dr. Begany has particular expertise providing forensic evaluations to psychiatrically complicated clients who suffer from intellectual disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism and ADHD, seizure disorders, and neurological impairments acquired from traumatic brain injuries. Evaluations include competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, competence to waive Miranda rights, malingering/feigned cognitive impairment, risk assessments for juvenile sex offenders, and evaluations of parents and children involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. Dr. Begany also provides consultation to school districts and private schools through risk assessments of troubled students and special education program evaluations. Dr. Begany is also actively involved in providing evaluations for public safety candidates and employees, including pre-employment psychological evaluations and fitness for duty evaluations.

Jill G. Durand, Psy.D.
Dr. Durand is a licensed psychologist with specialized training and expertise in clinical and forensic evaluation of children, adolescents and adults. Dr. Durand is available to conduct evaluations of competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, competence to waive Miranda Rights, and aid in sentencing, for juveniles and adults. She also conducts specialized risk assessments of violent, sexual and fire-setting behavior for adolescents and young adults through the courts and schools. Dr. Durand is available to conduct evaluations for families in juvenile and probate matters. Dr. Durand earned a doctorate from William James College (formerly the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology). She then completed an APA-Internship at Westborough State Hospital before accepting a position as a post-doctoral fellow in the Middlesex County Juvenile Court Clinics. Dr. Durand remained a staff psychologist in the Court Clinic for seven years and earned her designation as a Certified Juvenile Court Clinician I & II by the Massachusetts Department of Forensic Mental Health.
Frederic Krell, Ph.D.- Partner Emeritus
As a co-founding partner of Psychological Consulting Services, Dr. Krell has provided expert testimony in hundreds of Probate, Juvenile, District, and Superior Court matters. He has performed statutory evaluations as a Designated Forensic Psychologist and been appointed by Judges to conduct evaluations of families and individuals in the Probate Courts. He has also rendered opinions regarding sexual dangerousness of adults, and consulted to public and private schools. Prior to conducting forensic work, Dr. Krell developed and administered residential treatment programs and inpatient psychiatry services for children and adolescents. As Partner Emeritus, Dr. Krell is available for consultation, staff training, and supervision.
